A Journey Through Japan

Japan wasn’t a trip we meticulously planned for years—it was one of those magical opportunities that simply found us. A friend called with excitement in her voice and said she had discovered the perfect way to explore Asia: a cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line during cherry blossom season. We had always dreamed of visiting Japan, and since we’d only cruised with Carnival Cruise Line before, it felt like the perfect chance to try something new. It was an instant yes—a win-win in every way.

What made it even better? The cruise package included airfare, daily internet, meals, unlimited drinks, and discounted excursions. And if you know me, you know I love a good payment plan. The flexibility to pay what we wanted, when we wanted—as long as it was paid off a month before sailing—made this bucket-list adventure feel completely doable. Sometimes the only thing standing between you and your dream trip is realizing there’s a way to make it work.

We set sail on the beautifully refurbished Norwegian Spirit, an intimate ship carrying around 2,000 passengers. It felt spacious yet personal—big enough for endless dining and entertainment options, but small enough to feel relaxed and unhurried.

And then… Japan.

We wandered the vibrant streets of Tokyo, stood in awe of majestic Mount Fuji, soaked in the culture of Kyoto, explored the energy of Osaka, and visited Nagoya, Okinawa, Naze on Oshima Island, and Nagasaki—each destination offering something uniquely beautiful. From ancient temples and peaceful gardens to neon lights and bustling markets, Japan is a place where tradition and innovation exist side by side in the most breathtaking way.

We arrived two days early to soak up extra time in Tokyo—highly recommended! There are so many bucket-list experiences packed into that city alone. (We didn’t even make it to Tokyo Disney Resort, which I’ve heard is absolutely incredible—so clearly, we’ll be back!)

One of the most memorable evenings onboard was dining at Teppanyaki. For just $10, we enjoyed a specialty dinner that felt like an event. The chef didn’t just cook—he performed. Flames danced, knives flashed, laughter filled the room—and the food was unforgettable. It was one of those joyful travel moments where you look around and think, this is exactly why we do this.

Japan during cherry blossom season is pure magic. Soft pink petals floating through ancient temples. Snow-capped Mount Fuji in the distance. The hum of city life blending with centuries of history. It’s a destination that awakens your senses and stays with you long after you return home.

If Japan is on your heart—even quietly—consider this your sign. Sometimes the best adventures aren’t the ones you overthink. They’re the ones you say yes to.

Japan Travel Must-Do Recommendations

  • Download a Suica Card immediately

    • Get the Suica card as soon as you can — it is an absolute lifesaver.

    • Add money directly from your bank account and store it in your phone’s digital wallet (we used iPhone; Android may vary).

    • Use it to:

      • Ride buses and JR trains

      • Hop on the famous bullet train (Shinkansen!)

      • Pay at restaurants and shops

      • Grab snacks at convenience stores

    • It eliminates the need to constantly pull out your wallet — just tap and go. It makes navigating Japan feel effortless and honestly… kind of empowering.

  • Eat at 7-Eleven (Yes, really!)

    • Japan’s 7-Eleven is NOT like the ones in the U.S.

    • This became one of our highlights.

    • Endless fresh sandwiches (they even cut the crusts off!)

    • So many unique snacks and desserts

    • My personal favorite: the broccoli and shrimp sandwich

    • It’s affordable, delicious, and perfect when you’re on the go between sightseeing.

  • Use an eSIM for internet

    • Having reliable data is a game-changer.

    • We used Klook for our eSIM at a very low cost.

    • It allowed us to:

      • Use Google Maps to confidently navigate the transit system

      • Translate menus instantly

      • Communicate with locals using Google Translate

    • We found it much more convenient (and affordable) than using our phone carrier’s international plan, which was slower and potentially expensive.

  • Book activities through Klook

    • We used Klook to book teamLab Planets — and it was incredible.

    • It’s an immersive, sensory experience that plays on all five senses.

    • Klook offers tons of discounted excursions and activities — definitely worth browsing before your trip.

  • Drive Mario Street Karts through Tokyo

    • Yes, this is as fun as it sounds.

    • We cruised through the streets of Tokyo dressed in free character costumes.

    • The scenic route gave us a whole new perspective of the city.

    • Our guide helped us find amazing photo spots along the way.

    • It was adventurous, silly, and one of those “only in Japan” experiences.

  • Experience a Sumo Wrestling Show

    • We booked through Viator and attended a live sumo show paired with a traditional hot pot meal.

    • While the food wasn’t my favorite, the show itself was so entertaining.

    • There was even a Q&A session to learn about sumo wrestlers and their traditions.

    • It felt cultural, immersive, and truly memorable.

Japan is one of those destinations where a little preparation makes a huge difference — and these small decisions helped us maximize every moment.
