Flagstaff Snow Trip - Arizona’s Best Kept Winter Secret
When most people hear “Arizona,” they picture scorching heat, saguaros, and endless desert. But tucked away in the mountains of Northern Arizona is a completely different world — one filled with snowstorms, pine trees, cozy cabins, and that magical crunch of fresh snow under your boots.
Welcome to Flagstaff — Arizona’s winter wonderland.
Every January or February, we pack up the car and head north for our annual family snow trip. It’s become one of those traditions everyone looks forward to — trading palm trees for pine trees and sunshine for snowflakes.
Cozy Cabin Life
We love staying at Fort Tuthill County Park. If you have a military background in your family, there are discounted lodging options, including A-frame cabins that are fully stocked and perfect for families with kids. They also offer hotel-style rooms and even camping spots with Yurts if you’re feeling adventurous.
The property itself feels like a winter playground:
Sledding right outside your door
Discounted snow gear rentals
Fire pits ready for marshmallows and late-night s’mores
Open space for snowball fights and snowman competitions
But my favorite part? The kitchen.
With a big family, eating out every night adds up fast. Staying 3–4 nights means we can cook hearty, home-style meals together. And let me tell you — there is nothing better than a giant pot of chili simmering while snow falls outside the window. Cozy doesn’t even begin to describe it.
Arizona Snowbowl Adventure
Just minutes away is Arizona Snowbowl — the crown jewel of winter fun in Arizona.
And here’s the exciting part: kids 12 and under ski free.
With:
8 lifts
61 runs
A 2,300-foot vertical drop
Snowboarding, skiing, and scenic gondola rides
There’s something for every level — especially beginners like our crew. They even have guides and learning areas that make first-timers feel confident instead of overwhelmed. If by any chance there isn't much snow at the time of your visit, don't worry. Snowbowl will make their own.
One of the most breathtaking surprises? On a clear day, you can catch views stretching all the way toward the Grand Canyon and the red rock beauty of Sedona. Snow-covered peaks with desert landscapes in the distance — it’s uniquely Arizona and absolutely unforgettable.
Why You Should Go
Flagstaff in the winter feels like stepping into a Hallmark movie — without leaving the state. It’s affordable, family-friendly, adventurous, and cozy all at the same time.
If you’ve never experienced snow in Arizona, this is your sign. Pack the gloves, grab the hot cocoa, and start a new family tradition.
Who knows — maybe we’ll see you on the slopes one winter
